Alfie is a sweet natured boy who finds the world a scary place. Since arriving at SDR, Alfie has come on leaps and bounds and has formed wonderful bonds with his carers. He is still worried by men and needs slow and positive introductions. Alfie will benefit from having a ‘safe space’ in the home. This can be a crate, a pen or even a small room he can have to himself separated by a stairgate. It’s important that Alfie is placed in his safe space when people come to visit, so he isn’t forced into interacting with them. Introductions should be done slowly and positively and guest should be instructed to ignore Alfie and only to throw treats to him when he is calm and settled.
Alfie loves other dogs and has been kennelled with another dog since arriving. Originally he was kennelled with another Bichon male, then more recently a Shih Tzu male. Alfie may benefit from living with a confident dog in the home, pending a successful dog mix.
Alfie will require further training. This will help boost his confidence and will also further his bond with his new owner. He currently knows sit and would enjoy learning new commands and skills. It’s important that owners do not force Alfie into situations he cannot cope with and that everything done with him from handling to training to introductions to new people should all be done through positive reward based training.
In the right home, with understanding owners who will not put pressure on Alfie, he will make a wonderful and very loving companion. He is such an affectionate boy and will truly be a great companion to someone who has the time to dedicate to this wonderful young boy.
Can you offer this lovely boy a loving and permanent new home?
