Sweet Maisie came to SDR as her previous family unfortunately could not give her the attention she needs. She was rehomed but unfortunately her behaviour issues in the home became apparent and she was no longer safe to be around the children in the home. Maisie has settled in very well into her routine at SDR and she is a friendly, active girl who enjoys her walks with the volunteers and play time in our paddock.

In Maisie's previous home she began to show aggression during the evenings towards her adopters. She snapped and has bitten when she was touched. She has also shown signs of sleep startle aggression, which when disturbed can cause her to become very aggressive as her body thinks she is under threat. We have not seen this behavior in kennels, mainly due to the fact that Maisie doesn’t go into REM sleep in kennels or if she does it’s not witnessed, so adopters must be very mindful of this as it could be unpredictable. When on foster it took 6 weeks for Maisie to relax enough to go into REM sleep before this behaviour was witnessed.  Further behaviour management will be required and ongoing training, as well as working alongside a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist for additional support.

Maisie is looking for an adult only, experienced home with owners who have owned dogs (ideally spaniels) with behavioural issues before and have an understanding of dog behaviour, in addition knowledge of reward based training.  Maisie needs a house with an enclosed, secure garden with 6ft fencing for her to run around and have safe off lead time and space to play. Importantly Maisie will require a home with a spare, quiet room such as a spare bedroom, utility room etc which is big enough to provide Maisie with her own space for the resting/evening/night time area. This cannot be a room which is regularly used such as a kitchen/living room. This room will need a lock on the door or a tall stair gate so that she can be kept secure as she can open doors. Maisie cannot be allowed access to the bedroom or sleep beside anyone either on the sofa or bed icase she has a sleep startle episode.

Maisie is a very sociable young lady and loves to make new friends. She has been friendly towards visitors to the home and is popular with our dog walking volunteers. However this will require careful management in the evenings/nights to keep everyone safe.

Being a typical Spaniel, Maisie loves her walks and is very eager when out about trying to find new smells in the surrounding fauna & flora. Maisie walks well on the lead but does have the tendency to pull if she can smell something interesting. Maisie is not worried by passing traffic and will happily walk past other dogs (if somewhat excitably).  Maisie loves her exercise whether it be a good long walk or playtime (usually both). Maisie is not the kind of dog that will settle for an hour long walk a couple of times a day.  Maisie loves to play and tennis balls are the go to toy.

A good sized garden will be required for her to run, play and explore.  Maisie loves being outside hunting down tennis balls for you to throw. Minimum fence height 6 foot secure.

Maisie is a fantastic energetic young lady who is enthusiastic about life. Maisie's new owners must be willing to make adjustments and carefully manage Maisie. They must be able to give her the time that she needs to settle in and understand her needs.

The adoption fee for Maisie is £200
