After his owner fell ill, Chester joined us bringing an abundance of love and energy in equal measure. Whilst he is actually 4 years old, he fills a room with his puppy style energy and jumps up offering a tsunami of licks to everyone he meets. Once the initial excitement has dissipated, Chester enjoys flopping on your lap looking for tummy rubs whilst ambushing you with the occasional kiss! The focus on face licking is likely an appeasement process brought about by kennel stress and could well subside once he’s in a home environment.

Owner experience – We’d be looking for an owner with enough experience and physical strength to manage Chester’s excitement, energy levels and jumping. Whilst he walks quite well on lead, he could still be a handful at home.

Personality – Chester’s energy and affection are immediately apparent upon meeting a new person who will be assaulted with a barrage of licks. He tends to jump up as he bubbles over with excitement, accordingly a note of caution for anyone with mobility issues or young children. Careful when bending down as you could well meet him coming the other direction! His approach to meeting new people is reflected with dogs, and, whilst on occasion he is able to remain neutral and calm around an energetic dog, he has also tried to bite his lead as well as hump the dog. As such we’d need to look at any potential doggy housemates on a case by case basis with multiple dog mixes.

Training & Exercise – With a treat in hand you can distract Chester from his campaign of face licks long enough for a sit, often accompanied by a paw. However, once he’s done so, he does tend to resume jumping up and licking. His recall is 50/50, but with his strong food motivation this should improve with consistent training over time. He will also require training to get his energy under control and manage his jumping, then again, this behaviour could also be a result of kennel frustration and may improve in a home. On lead he walks well, with an amount of tension coming through now and then, but predominantly demonstrates good loose lead walking. He has shown trepidation with some traffic, in particular shying away from larger vehicles in wet conditions. Important to note that when over stimulated Chester can bite and tug on his lead and as such could be worthwhile walking with a chain lead.

Home alone time – 1 - 4 hours should be the initial home alone time for Chester but once settled there could be potential for 4 - 8 hours with a break. It’s worth noting that Chester is something of a counter surfer and has demonstrated an ability, in true lab fashion, to jump up and take treats from window ledges, table tops etc.

Type of home required – A secure large garden (6ft fence) to let Chester burn off some energy would be a plus.
