Scampi is a fun, playful, and endearing little terrier who quickly wins people over once he trusts them. Like many terriers, he comes with his quirks and areas that need work, but for the right experienced owner, he will bring plenty of joy, laughter, and character into the home.

Background - He was brought in to us from a family member who had tried his best to take over his care after a family member had become too ill to look after him properly but soon realised that his setup wasn’t fair for him. On arrival, Scampi was quite stressed and wasn’t able to be touched. We didn’t put any pressure on him and allowed him space, and he settled quickly in kennels. He doesn’t hold a grudge and is relatively easy to win over with patience.
His previous home was a very quiet, single adult home but due to illness, he wasn't able to get out and about in the outdoor world.

Meeting New People and Dogs – Scampi can be reactive around new people and dogs, so introductions need to be slow. Like any terrier, a way to his heart is through play, loving fetch and tug.
The first dog Scampi met was a calm male Dachshund, who he mostly ignored. At times he looked like he might lunge, but he didn’t.  When introduced to a busy female Spaniel, this is where we saw more reactivity and even attempted to bite her. We did manage to walk together, but it was very hit-and-miss depending on her movements.  When introduced to an intact male Lurcher, who was very calm, he didn’t seem bothered at all. They could have easily walked together without much issue.
With this in mind, he will need to be kept at a distance and on-lead, but we do feel that regular, productive outings with other dogs could benefit him. There may be some trial and error, as when he starts reacting it can be difficult to regain his attention unless the handler is experienced with reactive dogs.
When introducing walking buddies for him, they will need to be extremely calm initially, as anything slightly busier tends to trigger his reactivity.
The previous owner mentioned that he has met other dogs through family friends and was difficult at first but eventually okay. We don’t know what these dogs were like, but they were likely calm, older dogs with good social skills

Training & Exercise: At the vets and grooming he will need to be muzzled but seems to be calmer when it's on. He copes fairly well with grooming once he trusts the person handling him.
Offsite he is generally confident and enjoys walking, sniffing and exploring. He can be excitable and pull on the lead, and may try to play with the lead briefly when starting a walk, but is easy to redirect with a toy. He can be reactive to other dogs and then start to react to people, but having a toy works best when brought along. Again, he will need some training in this area. Although he can’t live with another dog he has been introduced to calm good-role model dogs as walking buddies.

Owner Experience  - Scampi is looking for an experienced owner who has a quiet home and can take him under their wing. He’s looking for people who are patient and can work on his confidence, building trust, and continue his training as he will need work in areas in handling, reactivity and with meeting new people.

Scampi is a bit of a complex little character and can be a bit tricky to capture fully in words. Anyone interested in him is welcome to discuss his personality and needs in more detail. For the right- experienced person, he’s a loyal, playful, and quirky companion who will bring plenty of character and fun into their home.
