Following a collision with a car, Silus’ owners were unable to pay for the required surgery and after time at Crossroads Surgery he was offered a fresh start here at SDR. He has settled in well whilst his injuries healed, and it’s been so rewarding to see him back on his feet bounding around the paddock like a puppy. One of his common behaviours is to lean into you (a dog does this to show trust and affection) and, whilst he may leave some fur on your trousers, the love he is showing is truly special. He is now looking for a forever home with an owner who can match his strength, energy levels and affection.
Owner Experience: He will be looking for people who have experience handling German Shepherd Dogs or similar large breeds and are able to physically manage a large dog.
Personality with People: Silus is a loving boy and will alternate between rubbing / leaning against your legs and jumping up, whilst asking for the occasional tummy tickle. At first, he might seem more focussed on exploring his surroundings than giving you attention, but that special bond will develop over time. When excited Silus can sometimes nibble hands during play or cuddles and will also often jump up and reach out with his paws, so something for new owners to be aware of and the reason any children in the home need to be over 15.
Personality with Dogs: Initially Silus demonstrated good awareness and communication skills in his dog mixes but whether through frustration on one occasion, or overreacting on another, he was unable to be let off lead and as such will need to be the only dog in the home. Once settled and following slow and sensible introductions he should be able to gain some canine companions for walks.
Training & Exercise: On walks he does pull, but a combination of strong food motivation and consistent training could see loose lead walking develop. We have noticed a tendency to lunge at passing vans / lorries and, given his history, its important for his new owners to be able to physically control him on lead. From a training angle Silus has some of the basics, including sit, paw etc, whilst his recall can be hit and miss. Silus loves a game of fetch but will require two balls as he is often reluctant to release whichever ball he currently holds! He also enjoys playing tug but can sometimes use his paws to create an unfair advantage!
Home Alone Time: 1-4 hours, potentially longer as he settles in.
Type of Home Required: 6 foot fence with a good sized garden.
Number of visits required by potential adopters: At least three visits made by all in the home.
The adoption fee for Silus is £250.00
