Meet Skipper, a Collie cross Spaniel with an endless supply of energy and a heart full of love. Originally rehomed after his previous family faced a move and couldn’t take him with them. Luckily, he was taken in by explosives search dog officers where they hoped to train him to become a search dog. Although he didn’t quite make the grade, he’s now ready for his next adventure with a sofa to cuddle on in the evening.
Skips is sweet, friendly, and the ultimate busybody, just like any good Spaniel. He’s convinced that everyone he meets is his “friend” although his enthusiasm can be a bit much for cats, so he can’t live with them. He gets along well with most dogs and once he’s had a chance to settle in, he’s very playful and enjoys bringing out this side in his doggy pals.
He’s a total attention-seeker, always looking for the next person to say hello to when he’s not on the move. He loved his vet visits—seriously, he thought the visit was the best thing ever. He travelled well but may need a bit of a helping hand to get in at first.
Outdoors, he gets easily distracted by his environment and especially when seeing other dogs. With this said his recall needs improvement.
While he may not have made it as a search dog, skipper is still keen with an active mind, with his breed mix in mind he thrives on stimulation. He enjoys activities that engage his brain and will need continued mental and physical exercise in his new home. His training background means he’s used to structure and activity, though he’s still working on some basic manners. He pulls on the lead, especially on walks, fine if you enjoy running but for a more leisurely stroll, he’ll need some work on loose lead walking as he can be strong at times. He has lived in the kennel for a little while and may need patience to adjust into home life again as some things spook him but he recovers well.
He would benefit from someone that has knowledge and understanding of collies or spaniel. However, providing owners are active and would be willing to train and get him into activities he could live with a first time owner.
If you’re looking for a fun, loving and active dog who’s ready to keep you on your toes he could be the perfect match for you.
