Mike, a 5 year old Terrier Mix arrived in the care of SDR back in October 2014 after being an unclaimed stray.
It soon became evident that Mike was not a dog that enjoyed or even liked to be touched or handled. We had no idea of his history, but knew that he probably did not had a very good life up until he arrived at SDR. It took a very long time for Mike to trust the staff, but even now, everything has to be done on his terms. Mike will now accept a few gentle little pats every now and then, but he will never be a dog that really enjoys human touch. He’s quite an independent little chap and as long as he has a tennis ball, he couldn’t be happier.
Mike doesn’t have the best back legs in the world and is on a long term joint supplement and pain relief when required. We have to ensure he doesn’t overdo it when he’s out being exercised otherwise he is very sore and stiff, which also impacts his behaviour; having said this Mike doesn’t know his limits and would, given the opportunity be out in the long grass chasing tennis balls all day.
Mike has suffered with his weight over the years (haven’t we all??) but we have managed to keep him at a nice healthy weight for quite a while now; it’s a good job he loves his fruits and vegetables as we use these for treats instead of regular dog treats.
